Abstract:
The Design and construction industry is one of the last industries to embrace Lean Manufacturing practices. It is also the only US industry with a decline in productivity over the past 40 years.
In this Lean 101 Tool Gathering we will be introduced to Continuous Improvement and Lean Principles. A short 2006 Shingo Prize Winner video “Toast Kaizen” will introduce you to Lean.
The philosophy of continuous improvement process is that in order to compete in the market place, we must improve our processes continuously and eliminate recurring problems, eliminate waste from our work, and focus on what adds value to the customer.
Working in a continuous improvement environment requires that people work as a team and that everyone make continuous improvement part of their daily work routine so improvements can be made and sustained in the long-term.
The Design and construction industry is starting to understand that continuous improvement is about people, and creating an environment that allows and encourages employees to make changes that remove non-value added activities from the process. These changes are called Kaizen or small and continuous improvement.

LCI Colorado Community of Practice
The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.
The Colorado Community of Practice of LCI provides local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers. We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share, and develop a lean community in Colorado. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
